Hello, ladies.

Every once in awhile, we all get a little… frisky. Or we want to get frisky. There are more explicit videos on the Internet for the intrepid, but sometimes you want something with a little more narrative.

Finding something to your taste is complicated, because if you haven’t noticed, the entertainment industry is pretty male-dominated. That means sexy movies are generally much more sexy to men: the women are objects, the men are conquerers, and someone always speeds away from lovemaking in an expensive and phallic car. That’s fine when you’re in the mood, but let’s look at some better options.

Despite the challenges, there are many women directors and some of them have made some pretty erotic movies. There’s a variety of arousing options and most of them are far more complex and nuanced, coming from a woman’s perspective. Also, the heroines are occasionally over the age of 22, which is very refreshing. Here’s what you should watch the next time you have an evening at home to yourself with the remote. Or make your partner watch, too—they might learn a thing or two.

9. Something’s Gotta Give

Don’t be scared off by the fact that Jack Nicholson is the primary love interest. Nancy Meyers directed this movie and she makes a very convincing case for having a sexual reawakening after sixty. Also, a very suave Keanu Reeves sexy stalks Diane Keaton into the bedroom as she giggles. My, my.

8. High Art

Directed by  Lisa Cholodenko, this film follows a woman discovering her attraction to another woman, all wrapped up in the 90s art scene of New York. It also features a delicious Ally Sheedy at her ruffled best.

7. Bound

If you want more of the women enjoying other women genre, you’ll love Bound. It’s basically a noir thriller with extended graphic scenes of two women together, in between extended graphic scenes of mob violence. It was directed by Lana and Lily Wachowski, so expect some of that Matrix-aesthetic. A perfect blend of sexy and camp.

6. Love And Basketball

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, this movie shows next-door neighbors, turned lovers, turned estranged adults find their way back together after negotiating the challenges of competing in the same field. It explores fidelity, betrayal, and exactly how much chemistry Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan have on screen. Spoiler alert: it’s a lot.

5. Sleeping With Other People

Director Leslye Headland makes this anti-romantic comedy into a very sexy rom com. Leads Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis play two people who very much want to get into each other’s pants, but who choose to resist that urge so they can learn to love. However, they only resist that urge with each other, so we’re still treated to a lot of visuals with this hot cast.

4. Marie Antoinette

Sofia Coppola reimagined the palace of Versailles as a hipster haven of pastel orgies, with a stockinged Kirsten Dunst at the center of the debauchery. Perfect for when you want sensuality with a few more powdered wigs on top.

3. Strange Days

Kathryn Bigelow helmed this sci-fi thriller, which features both sexual violence and just plain sex, so buyer beware. It does explore the importance of erotic memory with some extremely intense visuals, and stars Angela Bassett, who makes everything sexier.

2. Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love

This film was both written and directed by Mira Nair, and, well, it’s all right there in the title.

1. Jennifer’s Body

Director Diablo Cody often explores the nuances of a woman’s experience in unique ways, and in this film she literally uses the body of Megan Fox to express the horror of adulthood, budding sexuality, and (at times) early female friendships. And what a body it is.

If none of these get you going, you might need more than a movie can provide. But why not watch all nine to be sure?
