On Monday afternoon, people all over the country walked out of work in support of Brett Kavanaugh accusers Christine Blasey Ford and Deborah Ramirez, who each say that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted them at different times in school. Kavanaugh had been nominated to serve on the Supreme Court, a lifetime appointment. In addition to his ultra-conservative politics and ignorance about birth control, the man is an accused rapist—but Republicans won’t back down and withdraw his name despite widespread protests.
Everyone who came out to show solidarity with the alleged victims wore black; many of them are celebrities posting to Instagram and Twitter. But most affecting of all are the crowds of men and women posing in silent support. Images were posted under the hashtag #BelieveSurvivors, because the Trump administration has made it clear that they don’t. People want change right now, and they’re showing up for each other. That’s the first step.
