In the two weeks since 26-year-old rapper Mac Miller died of a reported drug overdose, his ex-girlfriend Ariana Grande has faced an onslaught of social media comments blaming her for his death.
The pop star disabled her Instagram comments and two days later posted a black-and-white caption-free photo of Miller.
Several days later, Grande shared a tribute to Mac Miller, who she dated for two years and ended up breaking up with in May partly due to his sobriety issues.
She also posted screenshots to her Instagram Story revealing that she’d been listening to Miller’s music.
Neither Ariana Grande nor her fiancé Pete Davidson showed up to the Emmys last night. In a statement released just before the start of the Emmy Awards, a rep for the musician announced she would be taking some time out of the public eye “to heal and mend.”
Besides the death of Mac Miller, Grande has been struggling with anxiety and PTSD after 22 people died and more than 500 were injured last year in a terrorist attack at her Manchester concert. Representative told People:
Contrary to reports, Ariana will not be attending the Emmys tonight. Pete has also opted to not attend to be with her in New York. Given the events of the past couple of years, Ariana is going to take some much needed time to heal and mend. She will be staying close to home and using this period to spend time with her loved ones and work on new music without deadline. She thanks her fans for understanding.
Fans quickly took to social media to offer words of love and support to the singer.
A source told People last week that Grande is heartbroken over Miller’s passing. “She can’t believe he isn’t here anymore. He was such a special person to her,” said the source. “She is very, very sad…this is a nightmare for her.”
