Ah, the Summer Olympics. A rare period that comes once every four years when people do absurd things, like spend two hours watching fencing. Do I understand the rules of Judo? Not at all. But you better believe I’m going to watch every single match. Also, handball may be one of the most entertaining sports I’ve ever seen — we need heavily promoted professional games stateside like yesterday.
The 2024 Paris Olympics started with a spectacular and controversial opening ceremony. Each nation’s athletes entered the world stage on boats floating down the Seine River, a decapitated Marie Antoinette sang the 19th-century French anthem “Ah! Ça Ira” with the French metal band Gojira, and drag queens danced the night away in Pagan-inspired costumes, which drew the ire of several conservative commentators. It was awesome.
Naturally, the tweets and memes about the opening ceremony have been nothing short of hilarious. Scroll through for some of our favorites.
